Pubblicato per la prima volta nel 2005 in occasione del centenario della morte di Jules Verne con il titolo originale Sur Le pas de Jules Verne, The World of Jules Verne di Gonzazgue Saint Bris ci prende per mano accompagnandoci in un viaggio lungo 86 pagine attraverso le tappe più significative della vita dell’autore francese.
Non definirei questo libro nè un romanzo nè un saggio, ma piuttosto un diario impreziosito dalle illustrazioni del fumettista Stephane Heuet e ricco di aneddoti e curiosità sulla vita di Verne. Sfogliando le pagine di questo bellissimo volume risulta evidente il grande lavoro svolto dall’autore Sint Bris (1948-2017) per raccogliere il vasto materiale biografico e metterlo insieme in modo coerente e appassionato, cominciando dall’introduzione di Arthur C. Clarke (già autore di 2001 Odissea nello Spazio) e la prefazione di Olivier De Kersauson (navigatore e scrittore francese) passando per le decine di fonti bibliografiche citate alla fine del volume.
Il libro è suddiviso in più capitoli: 37, per essere precisi. Partendo da Nantes, e attraversando le tappe più significative della vita di Verne, l’autore ci propone estratti di lettere, articoli, corrispondenze e curiosità, come la reazione sollevata a Venezia quando Verne alloggiò in incognito, sotto il falso nome di Prudent Allotte, e quando i veneziani se ne accorserso lo circondarono con striscioni che proclamavano “Evviva Giulio Verne”. Oppure quando Jules spiega del perchè nella sua casa ad Aimens la berra torre che dovrebbe servire per guardare il cielo in realtà sembra servirebbe più a guardare gli ospiti in arrivo.
